Can you believe that today is Super Bowl 50? What a landmark in the world of the NFL and Super Bowl! Which Team will make History!

Today it is the Young Panther Quarterback Newton with his grand smile and seamlessly fun attitude toward the game VS Manning the Broncos experienced Quarterback with his serious thinking attitude that has been through most everything in his lustrous career. It’s going to be an incredible game!

Way back in 1999 I attended Super Bowl XXXIII and went back to my studio to create a 43″X 50″ Pastel Painting featuring John Elway. It was a tremendous experience being there and creating this now historic Painting. In memory of all the past Super Bowls I have brought back this timely image of the painting Super Bowl XXXIII with the winning Broncos. Enjoy!

Have a great Super Bowl 50 Sunday!!!

Charnack/ CLINE

It all started with a dream to paint Dolphin Quarterback, Dan Marino, back in 1996.

L.A. Cline started to paint two Pastel Paintings of Dan Marino, one a portrait and one an action scene, entitled, ‘The Game’ measuring 38”X45”. These paintings were the spark that lit the fire to continue painting Sports Athletes. By going to the games, experiencing the head to head combat between players, the strategies and passion to win all fueled the Artist’s desire to paint a new kind of Sports Historic Painting capturing these moments forever.

L.A. Cline states, “For me our athletes are like gladiators, fighting against all odds to win and stay on top.’ A quote by Vince Lombardi says it all, ‘The harder you work the harder it is to surrender’.”

Creating the Super Bowl XXXIII Painting was an incredible feat for the Artist. L.A. Cline “Seeing John Elway actually make that last winning touchdown was a thrilling moment. To capture and immortalize that moment within a 45”X52” Pastel Painting, is a work of Art to behold.”

The Artist starts with a pencil sketch to scale before each painting. One painting as large as this one with so many details took six months to finish. All the creations of L.A. CLINE are drawn and painted by hand. The Artist uses a method of building layer upon layer of Pastel pigment developing the depth and details that unveils the “Super Realistic” quality of each legacy painting. This painting is a show stopper when displayed at events. It is also a part of the Artists personal collection.

The LACfineart.com website serves as an in-depth portfolio of the many facets of the Artist’s paintings that include: Corporate, Family, Florals, Landscapes, Pets, Wildlife, Entertainment and Sports. The original Nature Collection Paintings are reproduced as Fine Art Giclees. L.A. CLINE then embellishes each piece by hand to make it a one-of-a-kind work of Art. Each one looks like an original pastel painting that you can view in the Fine Art Store.

The most important detail of each painting is the emphasis placed on the likeness of the subject whomever or whatever the subject may be. Capturing the essence of the subject that the client adores brings each legacy masterpiece painting to a breath-taking conclusion.

CLINE

Oil Painting

Oil painting has been the traditional medium used for most portrait, florals and scenery paintings. Oil can produce very realistic and luminous effects using the right mixture of colors to achieve the brightness and shadowing of color. It was the choice for painters when invented in the 15th century by the Flemish, Italian and Venetian Painters.

Pastel Painting

The history of Pastels centered around France with Venice artist Rosalba Carreira born in 1675 the first popular painter who created art with pastel. Edgar Degas 1834-1917 took pastel and explored new techniques that really brought pastel to the forefront. Pastel became another choice that is as wonderful as oil. With the advent of modern technology such as Acid-Free Cotton papers mounted on an Acid Free surface, museum glass with UV protection that is hardly noticeable has increased the permanence and longevity of pastel paintings to the levels attributed to oil paintings. Unlike oils that use pure pigment and oil to bind the colors, pastels use pure pigments mixed with small amounts of binder such as gum arabic that are rolled into sticks and dried. The incredible thing about pastels is that you can achieve the same boldness in color as in oil paintings because pastels are a very pure pigment with a high degree of permanence made with very little binder. The look is softer more natural with pastels because of the powered finish of the medium, yet the colors are as grand as the color of oils.

Both Mediums

Both mediums start with the same pure pigment, one is wet and one is dry. They both have their “enemies.” Oil has a tendency to crack or dry out with age and the linen may stretch-out or wear at the points of stretching. Sometimes the glazes on oil paintings make it harder to see the image in bright light. These glazes are sometimes delicate and do in time react to light. Pastel paintings must not be touched and must be framed with glass and are usually sprayed. Water can damage the painting. Oil paintings are usually framed, but not usually, with glass. Now we have museum glass “True View” that truly allows you to view the pastel painting hardly noticing the glass that protects the art from damage and UV rays.

Realistic oil paintings have a luster to them and Pastel Paintings have a soft, more realistic, powdery look. Both mediums should be placed in a cool room with soft lighting, nothing directly shining on the painting.

L.A. Cline’s Pastel Paintings

When I create my Pastel Paintings I build the light into the painting using layers of colors. I work in the morning, afternoon, evening light, on sunny and cloudy days. This way my works change with the lighting of the day and look great throughout the day into the evening, with soft lighting that is already established in the room.

It is very important that you start a custom painting and leave plenty of time before it is expected to be completed especially if it is for a special occasion. It is customary to start a painting at least 6 months before the event and more if it is a large piece.

The Pastel palette has changed so much that I am amazed at the bright and light color combinations I can create. I use at least 15 to 20 layers of pastel to build the color I need for each Masterpiece Pastel Painting. After over 30 years of creating Pastel Paintings I know this medium produces the most beautiful effects with all types of subjects.

When I am commissioned to create a pastel portrait painting my pencil art sketches are drawn to the same scale as the finished painting. These pencil art drawings are the blue print of what my clients should expect as far as what the subject looks like and the size. It is a great way to start a portrait painting since it really relaxes my clients when they can see their painting as a portrait drawing and make corrections if necessary. I recently wrote an article in my blog about, “ Tips on How to Hire a Portrait Artist”. It is a great read!

I scanned the original pencil drawing of Flacco to create this email. This “Work of Art” bares the copyright symbol ©L.A. Cline, which means that no one can copy, sell, or distribute this image. You can enjoy the art or inquire about the original.

This animal portrait painting of Zebras is very technical as far as the placement of the stripes. Since every Zebra has their own stripe pattern and each stripe identifies that particular animal, this painting of a mother and her offspring is just as intricate as my portraits of people.

Using pastels to create the stripes is a time-consuming and intense process. Many layers of pastel have to be applied to finally get the crisp lines of the stripes. Even the colors have to be built up from medium to dark so that the end color has the layers of color that will give a rich natural look when the painting of the Zebras is finished.

Right now I am very happy to have gotten the mother and her babies face in place. The face and the legs of these animals are the most complicated areas of the body because of the intricate striped pattern, so to paint this original portrait, moving slowly is key. While painting this piece, I cannot jump around and paint different areas. I have to concentrate and do each area next to the most recently completed one, as some stripes connect to others in their overlapping bodies.

As a rule, after one year the dark brown zebra stripes generally turn to the familiar black; however, this mother still has some dark brown on her face and neck, while the rest of her body stripes have already turned to more dark black tones. Her foal, of course, is mostly dark brown with some areas of black.

As an animal portrait artist, waiting is the game you play when your working with painting animals. It takes hours until a “Tender Moment” happens. This one happened on a hot summers day when the Mother decided to lie down. The baby had a lower perseptive and they could look into eachother’s eyes as her baby walked over for some mothers milk or maybe for a little loving.

Pet Portrait Artist Sketch of Two Grevy Zebras by ©L.A. Cline

After finishing a Memorial Pastel pet portrait Portrait Painting of my clients’ beloved Blue Point Himalayan cat entitled, “Mr. Madison Blue”, I decided to continue with animal portrait theme as my first Masterpiece painting for the New Year 2013.

I created the new pencil sketch above of two Grevy Zebras shows a beautiful connection between Mother and her offspring. The Mother decided to lie down to rest on a hot summer’s day and her little offspring is approaching either for a loving nudge or perhaps reminding Mom it’s time to eat. This is a natural endearing exchange; a beautiful moment to capture in a fine art rendering.

Drawing the different striped patterns of each zebra was very complicated, especially because of one zebra being in front of the other. Every zebra has their own pattern and it is their signature of recognition. The Grevy Zebras are an endangered species – the largest of the African Zebra’s being nearly seven feet tall, with the Males weighing almost 1,000 pounds. The foals are browner in color and turn black as they become a year old. As I studied these beautiful creatures for my artist rendering I noticed that the Grevy Zebras have unique characteristics such as: large heads; long necks; big rounded ears; and smaller, more delicate striped patterns, with more distinction between the black stripes. Their stripes end to expose their bellies – where there are no markings. Lastly, there is a stripe that runs from their head mane all the way to down their tails. They now are considered to live in the northern areas of Kenya and in a few southern regions of Ethiopia.

One interesting fact I found is that the Grevy Zebra was named in honor of Jules Grevy, who received this species as a gift. He was the President of the Third Republic regime of France in 1882. As you may not know… the more research the artist does, the better one can achieve the creative readiness, mood and motivation, not to mention the insight needed to successfully capture and paint every aspect of what will be called a “Masterpiece”.

Now that I have done most of my research and finished this pencil sketch to-scale, I have the information I need to start the painting.

It’s always exciting starting a new painting. I have yet to name the painting, so if you have some ideas I would love to hear them.

Check back as the painting progresses and to all a Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost finished, I still must spray and Check all the lines to make sure everything is blended perfectly. The spraying takes about four to five days. Spraying it itself is an Art. To much can ruin the piece and not enough spray does not hold the chalk, so I take my time.

The whole demeanor of this Pastel Painting is soft and colorful capturing the essence of femininity with an image that defines how I look and at the same time recognizable to people know me. It is a modern interpretation of the soul of my inner self.

As I was creating my portrait, I could not help but to think of a painting, “Girl with Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer circa 1665. Here I work with a light background to show attention to the subject while Vermeer used a dark background to highlight is subject. Both the Maids head and My head are turned to expose one earring that is the main decoration in both paintings. This one jeweled detail changes the way a woman feels about herself. For that moment her whole demeanor becomes more regal with a sence of beauty that radiates from her eyes. Vermeer’s Maid is dressed in maids cloths and her young face is solemn, in comparison to my face that has more of an alluring quality with a more suggestive drap.

Another difference between the two paintings is that Vermeer’s Oil Painting is a much smaller painting and my Pastel Portrait Paitning is a large-scale piece measuring framed 40″X 50″. I consider my painting a tribute to the great Artist, Vermeer. I created this modern piece with some similar qualities attributed to this Old Master. We should always remember what has come before us.

I hope you enjoyed going through all the steps we Artist’s go through creating a work of Art. This painting will be scanned and with the scan I will make some note cards with my image. I will also make a Giclee print for my husband for his office. The original will be placed over the fireplace.

This is a wonderful gift for the loved on in your life. It is a great gift for a woman or a man to capture a certain prime in life. I am so happy that after so many years I finally have my portrait. It truly makes me very happy and I look forward to creating more Masterpiece Portrait Paintings.

Comments and questions are always welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The outline around my neck and shoulders is a very bold Green outline, while the skin tone reflects a delicate array of light colors. Even the stokes of color for my hair will eventually have this wonderful bold turquoise Green color weaved in.

The background of this Pastel Painting will be untouched with chalk, so I have to be very precise to make sure none of the chalk dust or stain will attach to the background.

This is a large format painting when framed it will be approximately 40″X50″.

I know many Artists before me have created portraits of themselves. This experience is something that took a lot of coaching from my husband and family. This was not a project I would have created on my own. But now that I am experiencing what my clients have for many years, its a special enjoyment to feel your soul reflected as you would want the world to see.

Presently I am finishing the painting and I look forward to sharing the completed creation. Your feedback would be most welcome!!!!

This image shows the birth of the creative process. I have just started to apply the first layers of Pastel Chalk to what will be the Original Self Portrait. I am using all of my favorite colors including Lavender, Purple, Pink, Green, Yellow and combined then for the skin tone and eventually for the hair and neck and bust. The pastel chalk is starting to map out my image. I have much more to go this is only the beginning!!
