Can you believe that today is Super Bowl 50? What a landmark in the world of the NFL and Super Bowl! Which Team will make History! Today it is the Young Panther Quarterback Newton with his grand smile and seamlessly fun attitude toward the game VS Manning the Broncos experienced Quarterback with his serious thinking attitude that has been through most everything in his lustrous career. It’s going to be an incredible game! Way back in 1999 I attended Super Bowl XXXIII and went back to my studio to create a 43″X 50″ Pastel Painting featuring John Elway. It was a tremendous experience being there and creating this now historic Painting. In memory of all the past Super Bowls I have brought back this timely image of the painting Super Bowl XXXIII with the winning Broncos. Enjoy! It all started with a dream to paint Dolphin Quarterback, Dan Marino, back in 1996. L.A. Cline started to paint two Pastel Paintings of Dan Marino, one a portrait and one an action scene, entitled, ‘The Game’ measuring 38”X45”. These paintings were the spark that lit the fire to continue painting Sports Athletes. By going to the games, experiencing the head to head combat between players, the strategies and passion to win all fueled the Artist’s desire to paint a new kind of Sports Historic Painting capturing these moments forever. L.A. Cline states, “For me our athletes are like gladiators, fighting against all odds to win and stay on top.’ A quote by Vince Lombardi says it all, ‘The harder you work the harder it is to surrender’.” Creating the Super Bowl XXXIII Painting was an incredible feat for the Artist. L.A. Cline “Seeing John Elway actually make that last winning touchdown was a thrilling moment. To capture and immortalize that moment within a 45”X52” Pastel Painting, is a work of Art to behold.” The Artist starts with a pencil sketch to scale before each painting. One painting as large as this one with so many details took six months to finish. All the creations of L.A. CLINE are drawn and painted by hand. The Artist uses a method of building layer upon layer of Pastel pigment developing the depth and details that unveils the “Super Realistic” quality of each legacy painting. Oil Painting Oil painting has been the traditional medium used for most portrait, florals and scenery paintings. Oil can produce very realistic and luminous effects using the right mixture of colors to achieve the brightness and shadowing of color. It was the choice for painters when invented in the 15th century by the Flemish, Italian and Venetian Painters. Pastel Painting The history of Pastels centered around France with Venice artist Rosalba Carreira born in 1675 the first popular painter who created art with pastel. Edgar Degas 1834-1917 took pastel and explored new techniques that really brought pastel to the forefront. Pastel became another choice that is as wonderful as oil. With the advent of modern technology such as Acid-Free Cotton papers mounted on an Acid Free surface, museum glass with UV protection that is hardly noticeable has increased the permanence and longevity of pastel paintings to the levels attributed to oil paintings. Unlike oils that use pure pigment and oil to bind the colors, pastels use pure pigments mixed with small amounts of binder such as gum arabic that are rolled into sticks and dried. The incredible thing about pastels is that you can achieve the same boldness in color as in oil paintings because pastels are a very pure pigment with a high degree of permanence made with very little binder. The look is softer more natural with pastels because of the powered finish of the medium, yet the colors are as grand as the color of oils. Why do people become Artists? Out of all of the career choices out there, why do some people feel they must create art as a profession? Certainly, there are safer, more financially predictable ways to make a living. What exactly is it that drives a person to make this “unpractical” life choice? The passionate need to express one’s self, experiences, opinions and visions can manifest itself in many ways. While we are born with this need and taught by parents, teachers and others as children, it is the few of us who fight to keep and develop the skills as an artist. It seems as though as soon as we begin our lives as artists, those of us who choose to keep, harbor, nourish and hone the inner artist are often thought of as flighty dreamers. Yet the reality is, few people live with the kind of passion, dedication, integrity, and commitment that gives persistence and will to believe you are truly born an Artist. The artist feels a marrow-deep need to document the legacy of being alive in this era, in this place, in this moment. The artist needs you to see the things that you are overlooking in your daily routine of “living.” The artist grabs you by the shoulders, stops you in your tracks, or alternatively shakes you out of your hypnosis to remind you that once the imagination is revealed it creates the wonderful world of Art. Almost all the Original Paintings created by L.A. Cline were commissioned works of Art that are permanently exhibited in Courtrooms, Corporate Offices, Universities, homes and businesses of many clients. L.A. Cline started the Sports and Entertainment collection in 1996 with a Pastel Painting of Dan Marino. These paintings were created from nostalgia or from the actual events like Super Bowl XXXIII. Each Painting has its own incredible story. The Artist went out and started this separate collection which became artworks featured on ABC Channel 10 TV and showings at the South Florida’s Sun Life Football Stadium and the BB&T Hockey Stadium. These pieces were show stoppers and the Artist received many commissions when these pieces were presented to the public. These two paintings featured here are from the Artists private collection that are now in the L.A.C. Fine Art Store. To create this Original Framed Pastel Painting L.A. Cline was at the game in the dugout waiting for Sammy Sosa’s turn at bat. Passes to the games were not easy to get so the Artist had to dig deep to find something extremely memorable to paint. You can feel Sosa’s feet planted firmly in the dirt while the force of his upper body twists to swing when the time was right. His cheek is puffed out with chewing tobacco or gum as he looked intently to see the pitch. It was an exciting forever moment. This image shows the painting framed.
