Re-creating floral fine art takes time because a painting has to be created first. The inspiration for the painting is crucial. My desire to create must very strong and endure the test of time so I want to paint the original and then re-create the art. It’s very exciting to know I have the opportunity to offer fine art to others at a lesser cost. With only one original I digitally scan the original then using the finest materials for this “Hidden Beauty” re-creation you see here. Sometimes I hand embellish a re-creation with the original painting right next to me. Embellishing is the closest to the real painting. Floral wall art captures the real likeness of the original painting. Every floral painting has a story. Creating nature’s beautiful flowers brings nature to our doorstep. Beauty for the sake of Beauty. Although unfinished, “Simply Beautiful” was posted on Facebook and LinkedIn. Allowing time between posting L.A. CLINE painted flowers to periodically update the painting. Showing an audience unfinished art became a big decision. Realizing people really liked seeing paintings being created I posted starting with one white center rose in the center of the painting. At this point, I have already worked on the sketch and the rose for a month. I try to post updates weekly or every ten days, adding a new flowers. Creating more flowers required building layers of pastel to match areas already painted. It was an adventure creating nature’s beautiful flowers. I did not expect the overwhelming reaction to the post. All the likes, comments, hearts, wows are so inspiring I no longer feel alone in my studio. In fact, I notice names that I recognize from earlier posts which is wonderful and seeing the new names is great! Next step, looking for the ultimate frame. The frame will be custom build and custom stained so I have to do my homework and choose something that will ultimately surround this extraordinary painting. Beautiful inspirations of flowers captures my soul to paint. To be inspired is something that comes naturally and cannot be rushed. The inspiration is all important for a painting because it has to endure the test of time, hold my attention to become a master piece. Flowers are beautiful inspirations representing, beauty Love, passion, celebration, peace, and memories are all a part of the way we see flowers. Flowers give meaning and beauty to our lives. Each of my Floral pastel paintings take me months to create because of the way I layer the pastel. I work in various light conditions during the day and evening so the light peers through the 15 to 20 layers of pastel. Working with pastel is a challenge. I am so in love with pastel and the way it looks and presents itself that I continue to express and discover exciting ways to work with the pastel colors. In this fast paced world I slow down and become one with the flowers and enjoy combining the colors of each stick of pastel against the heavy cotton acid-free paper I use. I am now creating a new sketch that will eventually be a large vertical Pastel Painting. So far I have been working on this sketch for two weeks now. This new Floral painting will have a white rose, white daisies and small white trumpet flowers as the featured spotlight grouping. The upper right section of the painting where the overlapping white daisy petals will be against the light background is where I begin drawing today. This white on white area is very difficult to draw and paint. There has to be subtle shading to distinguish between the forms and the background. However, once thought out and drawn in, the transparencies in this painting are going to be beautiful. I figure another week to draw all the details in the sketch for this painting. Then I transfer this sketch to heavy acid-free water color paper that will be mounted on acid free foam core as my working surface for my Pastel Painting. Finally, I can begin painting. To spend this much time on a painting my inspiration has to be a very strong one. The inspiration for this painting was the natural arrangement I created that I could not look away from. The way the flowers twist and turned left me breathless with the loveliness of these living beauties. Now they will live on with all their majesty in my painting. Can you believe that today is Super Bowl 50? What a landmark in the world of the NFL and Super Bowl! Which Team will make History! Today it is the Young Panther Quarterback Newton with his grand smile and seamlessly fun attitude toward the game VS Manning the Broncos experienced Quarterback with his serious thinking attitude that has been through most everything in his lustrous career. It’s going to be an incredible game! Way back in 1999 I attended Super Bowl XXXIII and went back to my studio to create a 43″X 50″ Pastel Painting featuring John Elway. Romancing Red Rose Love shows how important is it to protect love. “Romancing the Rose” pastel painting is a beautiful rendition of romancing red rose of love. The all important rose is protected. When I began this painting I started painting the rose. I used many layers of pastel on the original to build the sumptuous colors. For the re-creation I used three mediums to capture the same feeling of the original. I also embellished the re-creation with the original next to me while applying the layers of embellishment. When Spring is about to change our world, I think of the day I saw the most beautiful bright sun-kissed Yellow Cattleya Orchid. This incredible flower stood 10½” high and was truly magnificent. It was so bright I could see the Yellow color from about 100 feet away. This was a magical moment for me and something I had to paint. I was very surprised to see this Orchid that was in full bloom planted in an old pot under a tree with other empty pots. I started painting as close as I could to the orchid as not to disturb or move it. If you look at the painting, the dark green background symbolizes the dark area where this beautiful orchid was placed. There also an indication in the painting that there was a white plastic holder leaning against the bloom. The pink/orange part of the orchid allowed the orchid to bellow out with an even more vivid light yellow that at times had a translucent shimmer which made it even look brighter. The painting reflects the very same vivid yellow with the undeniable fantastic and beautiful shimmer that changes colors during the different lights of day. Floral paintings are a breath of fresh air. Mother Nature gives us the beauty of our world and if we surround our environment with flowers and their painted images the energy of this beauty makes anywhere a wonderful place to be. It is still a wonder that I can take all my beautiful thoughts and put them into action to create a sketch and then a painting about feelings I have imagined. Even after painting 40 years it still humbles me that I can take these thoughts and make them appear. It takes a tremendous amount of passion creating something you envision along with a great deal of thought before that breakthrough process that allows you to actually put a color on the canvas. When deciding to create an imaginary Leprechaun, I wanted the image in my painting to look so real that you would question if Leprechauns truly exist! Perhaps one would be dancing at your door and then disappear. I have always loved the stories about Leprechauns. Some of the more recent movies portray scary leprechauns, I prefer to take the more traditional versions that portrayed leprechauns as tiny, crafty, devilish, mischievous and intelligent older men that would disappear in a flash to avoid being seen. They do not like humans or open spaces and that is why I filled the background of this pastel painting with a forest of clovers so that this “Lucky Leprechaun” could disappear back into the forest if need be. Leprechauns are very difficult to catch since the fairies give them magical powers to use if ever captured. If you catch one, he still may be able to disappear or he may offer you three wishes. As an Artist, I am always looking for that beautiful inspiration to create another painting. Finding what you think is beautiful for a painting comes as a thought or vision that is undeniable and must be expressed. It is something you cannot get out of your mind. These types of aesthetic inspirations are very hard to find. There are so many different styles of art and what is beautiful to one is not to another. Not everyone sees beauty the same way that is what makes art so very interesting and personal. Beauty and art is a reflection of your personal taste. If you are drawn to a painting and would miss seeing the painting, you have made a personal emotional connection with the painting. Your space is your most personal part of your life. You live, work and relax in your home or office and it should reflect and be filled with images that bring you happiness. If you see a painting in a gallery or if you are working with the artist, request information or a letter from the artist that explains the point of view of why this was such an important image to paint. Shopping and Football are the Greatest part of the Holiday Season! Almost everyone loves to shop and buy something new for Holidays and Special Occasions. Having something new to wear or a decorative piece of fine art for your home, is a wonderful feeling of delight and happiness. Let’s face it, it never gets old to receive a present or go shopping for something you really want. It’s exciting and fun to give and receive. Now combine that with the Holiday Season, the lights, decorations, parties and Football. Football is the link that brings all the rushing, tackling and running to get all the things done before the Christmas TD. With Football comes the spirit of your home town, past memories and watching the games with new friends. Football is the glue that keeps the excitement and entertainment of the Holidays alive. Going to a game is a thrill. It was very difficult as an Artist to find the opportunities to get on the field so I could create a Collection of Sports Memorabilia Paintings. Our athletes are the gladiators of our world playing in different coliseums. The noise of 60,000+ fans cheering for their team to conquer and win is overwhelming, exhilarating and addictive for the creative process. Why do people become Artists? Out of all of the career choices out there, why do some people feel they must create art as a profession? Certainly, there are safer, more financially predictable ways to make a living. What exactly is it that drives a person to make this “unpractical” life choice? The passionate need to express one’s self, experiences, opinions and visions can manifest itself in many ways. While we are born with this need and taught by parents, teachers and others as children, it is the few of us who fight to keep and develop the skills as an artist. It seems as though as soon as we begin our lives as artists, those of us who choose to keep, harbor, nourish and hone the inner artist are often thought of as flighty dreamers. Yet the reality is, few people live with the kind of passion, dedication, integrity, and commitment that gives persistence and will to believe you are truly born an Artist. The artist feels a marrow-deep need to document the legacy of being alive in this era, in this place, in this moment. Almost all the Original Paintings created by L.A. Cline were commissioned works of Art that are permanently exhibited in Courtrooms, Corporate Offices, Universities, homes and businesses of many clients. L.A. Cline started the Sports and Entertainment collection in 1996 with a Pastel Painting of Dan Marino. These paintings were created from nostalgia or from the actual events like Super Bowl XXXIII. Each Painting has its own incredible story. The Artist went out and started this separate collection which became artworks featured on ABC Channel 10 TV and showings at the South Florida’s Sun Life Football Stadium and the BB&T Hockey Stadium. These pieces were show stoppers and the Artist received many commissions when these pieces were presented to the public. These two paintings featured here are from the Artists private collection that are now in the L.A.C. Fine Art Store. To create this Original Framed Pastel Painting L.A. Cline was at the game in the dugout waiting for Sammy Sosa’s turn at bat. Passes to the games were not easy to get so the Artist had to dig deep to find something extremely memorable to paint. You can feel Sosa’s feet planted firmly in the dirt while the force of his upper body twists to swing when the time was right. His cheek is puffed out with chewing tobacco or gum as he looked intently to see the pitch. It was an exciting forever moment. This image shows the painting framed. I am L.A. Cline a Master Pastel Artist and I have just put the final touches to the new Pastel Painting the “Lucky Leprechaun”. It is an exciting part of the process of finishing a painting when you feel the composition is laid out, the placement of the of the subject this mischievous Leprechaun, all the colors, the background detail and the foreground perspective is where I imagined everything would be. This journey was a long one for a while there; I was not sure what the background should be or how I would develop the pathway. For lack of a better word, I was “Stuck”. Getting “Stuck” on a painting, is not what an Artist wants to go through. Even though you may have the best plans laid out, somehow things change and what you imagine does not always fulfill your thoughts for the background, face or whatever you are working on at the time. Nobody talks about getting stuck on paintings. What does an Artist do? The first thing I do, is to get away from the painting and do something else. Although you will have the painting on your mind, it is best to start working on other things, restock supplies or finish things that were set aside. In other words, try to clear your head. Eventually, you will have to go back and try to figure out how to finish the masterpiece you have on your easel. I use the internet and research the project I am creating. Sports has always been a passion for me. I have had to be very persistent to have had the opportunities to create the amazing collection of Pastel Sports Paintings I have painted over the last 18 years. It all started with a dream to paint Dolphin Quarterback, Dan Marino. Back in 1996, I started to paint two Pastel Paintings of Dan Marino, one a portrait and one an action scene, entitled, “The Game” measuring 38″X 45″. These paintings were the spark that lit the fire. Going to the games and seeing the head to head combat between players, the strategies and their passions to win, fueled my desire to paint a new kind of Sports Historic Painting, capturing that moment forever. For me, our athletes are like the gladiators, fighting against all odds to win and stay on top. Vince Lombardi said “The harder you work the harder it is to surrender.” Creating the Super Bowl XXXIII Painting, was an incredible feat; seeing John Elway actually make that last winning touchdown was a thrilling moment. This image reflects the rendition of the Original Pastel Memorial Portrait of Lawson E. Thomas 1898-1989, I created for the Lawson E. Thomas Courthouse Center Dedicated, October 13, 2000. Now a reproduction of this painting can be seen in the “Living Artists File” at the Smithsonian Institute in their, American Art and Portrait Gallery Library, in Washington DC. I was blessed to have the opportunity to create this Memorial Pastel Portrait of Judge Thomas. I remember sitting with the Judge’s wife, Eugenia Thomas at her kitchen table thinking how dignified and beautiful she was even in her seventies. We sat for hours talking about their life and looking through a lifetime of family pictures. Her husband was able to achieve so much from such humble beginnings, having worked as a janitor while waiting for notice of his law school graduation. Thomas was the only Afro-American Law Graduate from the University of Michigan in 1923. Eugenia Thomas and I had a wonderful afternoon and kept in touch every Christmas for years. I was delighted that she approved of the portrait I created of her husband. As a side note, at the time I created this painting of Judge Lawson E. Thomas my last name was Charnack and since my marriage in 2007, I sign all my work L.A. Cline my older works go by L.A. Charnack/Cline. This pastel painting I have created of two Grevy Zebras experiencing their “Tender Moment” may look finished, it is not. Now that all the stripes are in place, and the forground and background have been painted the finishing process begins. It takes many layers of different Pastel color pigments to make the background color complimentary, the stripes the right amount depth of color with contrast and the foreground colors that indicate a base line so that the animals look weighted down on the ground. The finishing process takes me about a week or more to complete. This is where I use a magnifying glass to look at all the intricate patterns to make sure they are as they should be. I will move from right to left looking to correct details and perhaps add a few more. After I finish this process I look at the painting in all types of lights: morning, noon, evening, sunny and cloudy days and in different rooms, this way the lighting will not be any issue in most every day and evening settings. I will also finish my spraying so the pastel stays in place. It’s hard to finish a painting but after working so long with pastels you just know when it’s time to stop and if you know when to stop then you have finished the painting. This painting will be available as a Fine Art Giclee Print . The painting reproduction will look exactly like the original pastel painting and would be a masterpiece work of art for any home or office. The original painting without a frame measures 33″ Wide X 22 1/2″ High. The painting reproduction will be very close to those measurments. Whether a famous artist, emerging artist, an artist starting out, or a gallery, auction house, collector or anyone else is in the art business, cost is of the upmost importance. Art is, ultimately, a business. A portrait’s cost, or selling price for the art community, is based on the sell-ability of the artist and their particular segment of the market. The basic thought that is always present remains: whether or not the client is going to like and buy a piece of artwork. The part that many do not understand is that most artists don’t just “whip up” their portrait creations. It takes many years for an artist to perfect a commitment to their style. That is not to say that earlier paintings are not as good as paintings later on in an artist’s career; If the Artist is very good, their growth is natural and seamless – whether their styles change and evolve after many years, like Jackson Pollock – or their style continues unchanged throughout their career like the genius of Norman Rockwell. Either way, every artist starts out with a particular style, and when the time is right that style takes ahold of the artist. This perfection-over-time increases the value, cost or price point of an artist’s work and the finished painting. People must like the painting, of course, for without public appreciation, any art will be hard to sell. So an artist has to reach out to the public that will like and purchase their work. L.A. Cline creates the “Enchanting Bloom” Pastel Painting I am painting the beauty of life. The moment we all want to hold on too. This is a wonderful thought to have for the approximately three months I will be painting this piece. The hard part is that I cannot rush a painting but must remain calm so the Pastels will flow easily with color and thought. Remembering wonderful people and thinking of the people you love in your life now are the great inspirations that allow me to create. From the small start of the last image posted on July 14th, you can now see the center more clearly developed and expanding to the petals. There are some dark areas within the Rose however most of the colors are light with highlights and transparencies. For the past two weeks I have made color studies and painted. The petals are very fragile and delicate so the application of the chalk must also take on this feel. I am now starting to work on the areas outside the center bud. As I work outward I constantly go back and blend colors. Although still in a rough state the color palette is beginning to develop. If you click on the image to enlarge you can see that I hand-draw the Artwork and use a grid-system that is unique for every painting. When finished this Pastel Painting will be about 28”X28”. Family Matters Like all families there are the good times and the tough times. This has been a tough time for us. For any family who has lost a loved one this is for you. Mary, better known as “Greenma” was a wonderful 94 year old woman who I met about five years ago who recently passed on. The story goes that her young Grandchildren could not pronounce Grandma so Grandma became “Greenma”. “Greenma” and I met at family functions and there was an immediate connection between us. We really adored seeing each other and could not stop chatting when we did. I still can hear the sweet Southern tone of her voice. She dressed so modern yet it suited her. Even at 94! she looked like an elegant perfect Southern Lady. She was slim wore little or no makeup, was beautiful with light blue eyes and striking white hair to her chin all one length parted on the side with a lovely wave. Even young women were envious of her glamorous look. She will always remain my idol. She had an adoring family and an extraordinary Daughter who was the main caretaker. Her other loving Daughter also pitched in when she was in town. She was so loved by her Grandson, Granddaughters and Great Grandchildren. I feel so lucky to have met her and spent some of my life knowing her. She is forever in my spirit. It is her life that I am celebrating with the two new nature paintings I am now creating.
